We believe the way we relate—to God, each other and to the world—is the secret sauce of life. So, we want to explore, challenge, and champion what it means to maintain healthy relationships (and no, that does not mean perfectly and all neatly wrapped up, but it does mean intentionally).

What Does “Relationary” Even Mean?

Glad you asked! We wanted a name that feels warm, intriguing, and unmistakably relational—without the baggage of something overly technical or doctrinally loaded. And let’s be honest, it just sounds cool.

Here’s why we love it:

  1. It is an unusual, playful word, meaning people actually have to listen and think before jumping to conclusions.
  2. Like “library” or “sanctuary,” it hints at a compendium of all things relational.
  3. Our name also highlights the vital role of relational wisdom, skills and teamwork in every aspect of life.
  4. It reflects the urgent need for our fragmented, individualistic society to rediscover deep, non-sexual intimacy and true connection.
  5. It works as an adjective or adverb, so we can talk about the how (doing things “relationarily”) and the what (our unique “relationary” take on things).
  6. “Relationary” conjures up all sorts of great associations like “literary” or “dietary” and it suggests something profoundly connected to relationships.
  7. Might “relationary” also be a convenient shorthand to describe Jesus’ ethic, maybe even the overarching theme and orientation of the entire Bible story? After all, Jesus famously summed up the whole Hebrew Bible in “loving God” and “loving your neighbour”.
  8. “Relationary” actually sounds a bit like “visionary,” or even “revolutionary,” suggesting transformative action—a person committed to shaping relationships for the better.
  9. You might even catch glimpses of Charles Taylor’s social imaginary—a fresh, relational way of seeing society and our place in it (without getting too abstract, we promise!).
  10. At the end of the day, Relationary is just about making relationships work—intelligently, intentionally, and with a bit of panache and heart-warming passion.
