7 Marks of Emotionally Healthy Discipleship

In recent times I’ve gained a lot from Pete Scazzero’s vision of emotionally healthy spirituality.

Essentially, there shouldn’t be a disconnect between our emotional and spiritual maturity. As I get older, and hopefully wiser!?, and with more experience as a Christian and a church leader, I find Pete’s definition of discipleship appealing. It sounds like Jesus, and it is probably a million miles from the definition I would have written as a young adult informed by the church growth movement. See what you think and share your thoughts with us…

  1. Be present to yourself in order to be present to others
  2. Follow the crucified Jesus – let this drive out bad discipleship
  3. Embrace God’s gift of limits – our limits can free us rather than oppressing us
  4. Grief and loss – integrate and learn from both
  5. Make love the measure of my spirituality
  6. Breaking the power of the past
  7. Leading out of vulnerability and weakness
